In California I had a job with a one hour commute both ways. I only worked two days a week so that was nice but the REALLY nice thing was that the drive times were always opposite of rush hour! I'm talking about huge four to six lanes of highway jam packed rush hour with bridges and all that mess and confusion. So when I would drive to and from work I would cruise along at the speed limit counting my lucky stars.

However, one Sunday morning on my way to work there was a jam and I thought "why at 6:30am would there be traffic?" Well, one of the overpasses in Oakland collapsed because a tanker caught on fire at 3am. No problem for me! I just took the Bay Bridge that day:) Funny how sometimes commutes can suck (I've had my share) and others can work out nice.

Most of the time I live within walking distance from work. It's nice.

It takes me 30 minutes to get to work. If I am lucky, it takes me 40 minutes to get home.

If I am really lucky, no one wrecks into me either way. Also, if someone else wrecks on 235, it takes me over an hour to get home because rubbernecking here is ridiculous. And people pass on the right in turn lanes and everyone drives in the left lane, no matter what speed they are going, with someone glued to your bumper, tailgating. I never thought I would say this, but I miss Florida drivers. Maryland drivers are far, far, worse.

Yeah, that's right...I'm bitter. Two wrecks in 6 months. Neither one my fault.

(Exhales, unclenches teeth and shakes his head.)

I live 8.5 miles from work and it takes me 15 minutes to get there.

I found that the longer commute would allow me more time to unwind from work and I wouldn't be upset about work stuff when I got home. Now that I don't have the long commute I miss that. What you can do is work off shift, like 6-2 and miss the rush hour if they'll let you. You can also spend your time listening to music, books on tape, etc. I even tried porn on tape, but that was just weird. :)
